Are Pods really better than regular detergent?

We’ve seen many ads about detergent pods for dish washers and washing machines claiming their convenience and cleaning power as superior to regular detergents. On the surface, it seems like a good idea, but how good is it really?

As it turns out, especially for our Rock County residents, not so much.

These detergent pods (or packs) contain highly concentrated detergent product (among other things) in a water soluble container. These pods are designed for use in moderately hard water, which is the norm all over the country. Here, however, our water is very hard, so most houses have a water softener. Water treated by softeners can be very soft, containing nearly 0 grains of hardness. This means less soap is bound up with the minerals in the water, often leading to suds and acting as a more highly concentrated soap solution.

Suds and excess soap concentration in general can lead to leaks, seal damage, pump damage, and issues draining water after a cycle.

Instead of soap pods, we recommend a powder or liquid detergent, used sparingly. In general less than the amounts stated on the packaging, as they are written for moderately hard water as well. This will save you money on soap, and headaches in the long run.
